There are 40 food deserts in Jacksonville Florida. According to the USDA, a  food desert is a tract in which at least 100 households are located more than 1/2 mile from the nearest supermarket and have no vehicle access OR 33 percent of the population live more than 20 miles from the nearest supermarket. Melanated Growers will be planting 13 community gardens in these areas during the spring planting season of 2024 that will yield harvests well into the fall.
